PATTERNS AND DISPLAYS:
Basic brown

Squid show Basic brown during daytime hours when the light intensity is high. The squid’s body has a uniform brown background color and the reflective units (mid-dorsal line, fin dots and mantle dots) are visible. Along with body size and occasional scars these dot patterns can be used for individual identification purposes.

In the basic brown pattern it is also possible to distinguish between male and female adult squid.

Males have distinct fin dots on a uniform brown background and have a pale or white fin edge line.

Females, on the other hand, have a gradual transition from brown to pale towards the edge of their fins and do not show distinctive fin dots.
