PATTERNS AND DISPLAYS:
Flicker

Flicker is a male courtship signal - the indication of intention to mate by passing spermatophores. This display has a pastel background which, depending on the observer, is described as iridescent pink, lilac, purple or blue-grey. Additionally, waves of chromatophore expansions and contractions pass over the body’s surface rapidly, making a stroboscopic effect. Stripes can be superimposed on it.
