PATTERNS AND DISPLAYS:
Mottle

Mottle appears on a pale, yellow or brown background as a set of irregularly distributed dots and splotches. This display is presumably camouflage addressed to potential vertebrate predators and is seen when squid maintain a position near the substrate or other objects in the water. It also appears in adult female squid during courtship sequences and while laying eggs under rocks and rubble.
